What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the world “yoga”?

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj” which means to “unite or integrate”. It´s about the union of a person´s own consciousness and the universal consciousness. Ancient Yogis had a belief that in order for a man to be in harmony with himself and his environment, he had to integrate the body, mind and spirit. This could be done with the three main Yoga structures; exercise, breathing and meditation. As a result, emotion, action and intelligence are able to maintain the balance.

Yoga has evolved over more than 5,000 years and has been embracing the spiritual practice since then. Over 15 million people practiced Yoga in 2003, according to a landmark study by Yoga Journal magazine. It has become today´s hottest mind/body trend thanks to all the benefits that brings into our daily lives. The fact is that Yoga can have a rejuvenating effect increasing energy, improving focus, flexibility and reducing the symptoms associated with stress and overall good feeling. It can help us to return to a state of balance and health. It always brings something new to learn and can be modified to suit all levels and capacity. There are many different styles of yoga, it can be slow and gentle, challenge strength and be very introspective. So yes, there is a style to match most personalities.

Because Yoga has become very popular through social media, we´ve created an Instagram account where you can appreciate the beauty of Guatemala and feel the inspiration of both yoga and some of the world destinations for yoga in Guatemala like Lake Atitlan, Antigua or even academies in the city.
